Diabetes experts suggest that testing blood glucose at home helps you to maintain better control over your blood sugar levels. However, an article published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2017 showed that this is not the case. So if you are a type 2 diabetic, and have a glucometer at home, what can you do?
Let me suggest how you can use that glucometer to control your blood sugar by identifying foods that are likely to cause elevation of your blood sugar. Most of these foods come from or are made with grain and grain-flour products. The first thing you have to do is identify four or five of those such as rice, pasta, noodles, bread, pizza crust, and identify what is the maximum you will eat during a meal in a given day.
And you are going to test these in your home at your convenience using the glucometer. These foods are not palatable so you need to pick a sauce that goes with it. You are going to test each of these foods, you are going to eat each of these foods with the same sauce so select one you really like.
Also you need to drink something, I suggest plain water, but you can have warm water or cold water or carbonated, it makes no difference.
You will be doing this at home so select a time of the day, I suggest that you use the same time of the day for each of these foods, but they don’t have to be done on consecutive days.
On the day you choose, prepare the food with the pasta, keep it on the table, select the amount water you are going to drink, then get your glucometer, check your blood sugar and write it down and write down the time. Immediately thereafter sit down, eat your meal.
Now check your blood glucose again one and a half hours after the beginning of the meal, and again thirty minutes later.
So to summarize prepare your food, check blood sugar, eat your food, 1.5 hours after beginning of the meal check your blood sugar and one more time 30 minutes later.
Now you will continue this pattern of eating and measurement for each of the foods that you have selected, whether it is pasta, rice, or pizza crust, noodles, bread, it does not matter.
For control, you do the same except this time, instead of using grain-flour product, you use steamed vegetables. If you are a non-vegetarian, you can cook your meat, white or red, it does not matter.Use the same sauce and eat it and check your blood sugar. If you are a vegetarian, you can use lentils or dahl cooked and mixed with the sauce and eat the same way.
If my calculations are correct, you will find that on the days you eat grain-based products, your blood sugar is significantly higher.
Now you are in charge, not your medication. You can decide what to do and how to control your blood sugar. All you have to do is cut down on your grain-flour products and you don’t need medications to control your blood sugar. You are in charge.
