This week’s topic is diabetes and cancer. Let me start with two facts: First, a recent review published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that between 1988 and 2015 there was a 63% percent increase in colorectal cancer among patients aged 20 to 50 in the United States. Second, according to the CDC among adults aged 45 to 64 in the United States 44% percent have pre-diabetes or diabetes.
What is the connection between these two facts? You may ask. Cancer cells.
Watch this short video where I explain more about this important relationship. Or follow the transcript below.
When cells multiply uncontrollably there are three potential ways in which a person with diabetes can have cancer.
One, cells lining the intestine or replace every five to seven days. Normally, however, if you have chronic inflammation, the self-turnover is faster and some of this new cell could have damaged genes. In other words, mutations could lead to cancer formation. Second, glucose availability promotes cancer cell multiplication because cancer cells use glucose to provide energy. Third, insulin promotes the growth of all cells including that of cancer. This means controlling blood sugar through dietary means rather than using insulin is one way to reduce your chances of developing colorectal glands. How to accomplish this is explained in my book surviving cancer.
